What Gaps, Sensors, and Obstructions Tell Us About Passenger Protection

The System Behind Every Safe Lift Ride

Below, we break down how each of these safety checks works in practice, what they reveal about the standard a lift ride should meet, and the credentials to look for in a reliable lift maintenance company. At BELIFT, these checks are part of every installation and maintenance visit.

What Makes a Lift Door Safe and Why It Matters

A lift door is a continuously monitored safety boundary, protected by two devices working together.

The first is the light curtain, unveiled in 1951 by Erwin Sick as a simple wooden model. Since then, light curtains have evolved to project an invisible field of infrared beams across the full height of the doorway. The moment that field breaks, the system registers the obstruction instantly. The second is the door safety edge, a sensitised strip along the door's leading edge that detects physical contact, catching anything the light curtain might miss at floor level or in tight gaps.

These devices work together as one system, the moment any protective device activates, doors must reopen, a requirement built into every installation BELIFT completes. Every safe home lift we install relies on lift safety sensors calibrated to detect the smallest interruptions, giving passengers protection that does not rely on reaction time.

How Precise Measurements Protect Every Passenger

A gap of more than 10 mm at a lift doorway can catch a passenger's finger or sleeve, turning a routine ride into an injury.

We measure every doorway gap with a gauge for precision. At the landing door, the space between the door panels and surrounding frame must stay within 10 mm. At the lift car door, that same panel clearance applies, with the doorway gap allowed up to 12 mm. These figures follow Building and Construction Authority’s (BCA) lift safety guidelines, and we verify them on site during every installation and maintenance visit.

Also, we assess what happens when something larger blocks the door. As a built-in safeguard, if an object thicker than 25 mm gets caught at the door sill while shut, the lift will not move. The lift only moves when every door is properly closed and locked. We confirm this with an electrical contact switch fitted to the door, if that switch isn't closed, the lift stays put.

How to Choose a Reliable Lift Maintenance Partner

A home lift is only as safe as the technicians maintaining it. Anyone searching for lift maintenance options in Singapore will find no shortage of providers, what sets providers apart often comes down to the credentials they hold.

The first is bizSAFE, Singapore's national workplace safety programme, structured across five progressive levels, each raising the bar for how a company manages risk on site. The highest tier, STAR, is only awarded after an external audit confirms a company's safety management system works during practice. A provider at this level signals that technicians working inside a lift shaft follow a process built to protect both themselves and the space around them.

The second is ISO 45001, an international standard for occupational health and safety management. Where bizSAFE verifies local compliance, ISO 45001 extends that same rigour to a globally recognised benchmark, useful for providers who want their safety practices to hold up against international standards.

The third is BCA's ME09 grading, the credentials specific to lift and escalator installation and maintenance. Contractors are assessed and graded based on project track record and technical capability, with higher grades reflecting a stronger history of handling demanding projects and passing BCA's standards.

Knowing what these credentials represent gives homeowners and estate managers a clearer way to evaluate reliable lift maintenance companies in Singapore, and a practical starting point on how to care for home lifts beyond routine servicing. By that measure, BELIFT holds bizSAFE STAR, ISO 45001, and ME09 L4 grading, alongside ISO 9001 and ISO 14001. To see how we actively put these standards into practice, read our detailed guide on "Making Safety a Reality on Every Project Site".

By measuring every doorway gap to precision, calibrating light curtains alongside door safety edges, and maintaining the highest industry credentials, the daily safety of a lift system relies on rigorous technical standards. By integrating regulatory checks into routine maintenance, we verify that safety sensors and obstruction mechanisms respond correctly before an issue occurs.

At BELIFT, we believe lift safety is achieved through rigorous maintenance and compliance with recognised industry standards. These principles guide every visit, our track record with residential and commercial properties across Singapore is proof that we adhere to stringent BCA regulations and deliver with speed and care. We are ready to provide this same level of expertise for partners and homeowners who value the difference a safe, well-maintained lift makes.
